About the region

Clyde is a small town in Central Otago, a region located in the lower half of the South Island of New Zealand. Originally established during the gold rush in the 1860s, Clyde is steeped with history, including many buildings that are still in use in the historic precinct.

The surrounding area was also established during the gold rush period but in subsequent years became known for its fruit, that thrived here in the hot, dry summers. Initially this was mainly stone fruit orchards but now vineyards are becoming a more common sight across the landscape.

Central Otago neighbours the popular Queenstown Lakes District that is famous for its skiing and extreme sports - gaining the title ‘the adventure capital of the world’. With around 2 million visitors per year, the region is one of the most popular destinations in New Zealand.

Lately, more and more tourists are making the trip over to Clyde and other Central Otago destinations to discover a slower paced lifestyle.

The rocky, mountainous landscapes make for stunning views across each of the seasons, from winter snow to scorching summers. Meet friendly laid-back locals, dine in historic buildings like Oliver’s Restaurant and experience NZ's Original Great Ride the Otago Central Rail Trail as well as the new Lake Dunstan Trail. Of course you will also enjoy hopping from vineyard to vineyard wine tasting!
